On Thursday, 27 August 2009, Major Roberts of the Salvation Army issued a press release urging the nation to “…move on from anti-smacking distractions”.
He also stated, that the Salvation Army “is pleased the Prime Minister is not supporting attempts to prolong the debate”.

Thanks again for your call the other day in response to my mail.
I must say that John Key’s response to the result of the Citizens Referendum, although not quite unexpected, is still utterly disappointing!
It just shows that this National Government and in particular the Prime Minister have the same arrogant disregard for the people [...]
The final results for the Citizens Initiated Referendum are in: 87.4 percent or 1,470,755 of voters said a loud and clear NO to Sue Bradford’s “Anti-Smacking Bill”!
A lot of comments have been made about the “low” voter turnout of 56.09% and some “mathematics geniuses” (Sue’s cousins?) came up with the formula that 87.4% of 56.09% voters [...]
